“It's Raining Shepherd Lady”. A French song from a comic opera written by Fabre d’Eglantine in 1780. The shepherdess the song refers to is Queen Marie-Antoinette who loved to play the shepherdesses in the Château de Versailles gardens. Although it is considered as a nursery song, its words are not quite “innocent”.
Why is Mona Lisa called Mona Lisa in French? Leonardo da Vinci painted Lisa Gherardini whose husband was Francesco del Giocondo. The young woman Lisa is nicknamed Mona Lisa because of her husband's last name. Giocondo has been translated into French as Mona Lisa. This painting is called Mona Lisa in English because it is a diminutive of Madonna Lisa (Madame Lisa) On your next trip to Paris, you can see the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Why is this painting on display at the Louvre Museum in France? Leonardo da Vinci was Italian. Francois I, the king of France, admired the works of Leonardo da Vinci. So he invited him to come to France. When he left Italy, he took the Mona Lisa painting with him to France. Francois I bought the painting. Then, the painting became part of the royal collection. Then it was exhibited at the Palace of Versailles in the cabinet of Louis XVI until 1650. Finally, Napoleon gave it to the Louvre Museum in 1805. Did you know that this painting was once stolen? In 1911, the painting was stolen by a worker named Vincenzo Perugia. The painting was found two years later in Florence, Italy. Vocabulaire / Vocabulary: le premier avril: April first un poisson d'avril: April Fool's Day faire un poisson d'avril: make an April Fool's Day coller un poisson dans le dos: to stick a fish in the back faire une blague: to make a joke rire: to laugh se moquer: to make fun of Today, we are going to talk about a French tradition. French say « poisson d'avril » instead of « April Fool’s » on April 1st. How do the French celebrate April 1? Children make paper fish and stick them on the backs of their friends without getting caught. They find it fun to see their classmates walking around the classroom all day with a fish on their back. Children and adults also joke with their friends. If the friend really believes the joke, the person says, "poisson d’avril." Some examples of jokes: A famous cookie brand had promoted a new cookie that kids would love. It was a cookie with broccoli filling. The brand said at the end of its commercial "April Fool's Day". A man gave his wife a beautiful red candy apple? His wife bit into it and in reality it was an onion covered with red dye. The SNCF (French railway company ) had used the voice of Homer Simpson for its announcements in stations. In English you is used as subject and object personal pronoun but in French we use different words accordingly. Tu is always subject: Tu parles anglais. You speak English. Où vas-tu ? Where are you going? Comment vas-tu ? How are you? Toi can be: 1/ Indirect object when the object is placed after the verb and after a préposition (avec, de, pour, sans, etc. when you want to say: for you, with you, without you, next to you etc.) Je travaille pour toi I work/am working for you Elle voyage avec toi She travels/is traveling with you Je suis assise à côté de toi I am sitting next to you 2/ Subject in specific constructions when we want to emphasize on the subject: Je vais bien, et toi? (I’m well, how about you?) Me, I am French and you, you are Belgian Nous sommes enfin au printemps! Springtime
Here are the long days, light, love, delirium! This is the Spring! March, April with a sweet smile, May in bloom, June blazing, all the beautiful friendly months! The poplars, asleep by the riverside, Bow gently like great palms The bird quivers at the far end of the calm, tepid woods It seems that everything laughs, and that the green trees Are joyful to be together and say verses to each other. The day comes crowned with a fresh and tender dawn The evening is full of love, the night, one can almost hear Through the immense shadow and under the sacred sky, Something happy singing in the infinity.
Le goûter (Snack time) is usually around 4:00 / 4:30 pm. The children have a snack when they come home from school. They eat cookies, a piece of cake, fruit, cereal or toast (bread with jam or chocolate). They drink water, orange juice or milk.
I often hear "Je suis bien" which is a word for word translation of the English "I'm fine". The answer "Je suis bien" is not correct. The correct answer is "Je vais bien" or "Je ne vais pas bien". Voici mon astuce préférée : Voyelle on avance, consonne on recule.
The United States and France do not change time at the same time. The United States will change time on Sunday, March 13 and France will change time on Sunday, March 27. But why why do we have to change time? The time change was implemented in France in 1976 after the oil crisis of 1973. The purpose of the time change was to save energy. It takes place twice a year, in autumn (end of October / beginning of November) and in spring (end of March / beginning of April). Should we go backwards or forwards by one hour? Here's my favorite tip: Vowel forward, consonant backward. The words "été" and "avance" begin with a vowel like the verb "avancer" so in summer we advance by one hour. One loses thus one hour of sleep. Ex: on Sunday morning after the time change, it is not 8 am but 9 am. The words "hiver" and "recule" begin with a consonant like the verb "reculer". In winter we go back one hour. One thus gains one hour of sleep. Ex: on Sunday morning after the change of hour, it is not any more 8h but 7h.
Voici quelques astuces: I sometimes hear, "Cet an, je vais aller en France." This sentence is not correct. Here is the correct sentence: "Cette année, je vais aller en France." In English "an" and "année" have the same translation (year) so it's hard to understand how to use them in French. Here are some tips: J'ai remarqué que quelques étudiants pensaient qu' attendre et to attend signifiaient la même chose.
I noticed that some students thought that "attendre" and "to attend" meant the same thing.
Anecdote : Cette statue regarde celle de New York. Did you know that there are several Statues of Liberty in Paris? In Paris, not far from the Eiffel Tower, there is also a famous Statue of Liberty. It is located on the Ile aux Cygnes. Bartholdi's workshop was very close to this place. Anecdote: This statue looks like the one in New York. If you visit Paris, you can see other statues of liberty. First of all, you can see one in the Luxembourg Gardens. It is a much smaller bronze model (2.85m high) that was placed in 1906 in the Luxembourg Garden. It is one of the first attempts of Bartholdi. This small replica was eventually moved to the nave of the Musée d'Orsay following the theft of the torch and its general deterioration. In 2013, a more recent replica of the Statue of Liberty was installed in the famous garden. Then, you can see another one at the Musée d'Orsay. Removed here for conservation reasons in 2012, the original replica from the Luxembourg Garden is now on display for all visitors to the Musée d'Orsay in the main nave, at the very beginning of the museum's tour. Finally, you can see two others at the Musée des Arts et Métiers! There are two of them in this museum: one of them is exhibited in the old church, at the end of the visit of the museum, in 1/16 scale. It is the real original statue, since it is the one that Auguste Bartholdi will use to realize, by enlargement, the New York statue. The other one is installed outside, on the square of the museum, and was made on the model of the one inside and with the help of Gustave Eiffel in 1881. In reality, it left Paris for the United States in June 2021... and will return in 10 years. It was first installed from July 1 to 6, 2021 at Ellis Island and then from July 14, 2021, it is installed in Washington DC in the gardens of the French Embassy.
Today is Mardi Gras! The date changes every year. Mardi Gras is 47 days before Easter. After Mardi Gras, Lent begins. Lent is the 40-day period that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Good Friday evening (just before Easter Sunday). During Lent, Christians must do penance before Easter. They must not eat meat or fat. Mardi Gras is therefore the last day of "pleasures". That's why on this day, people eat doughnuts, bugnes, pancakes and other fatty dishes. For Mardi Gras, it is necessary to have fun, so many carnivals are organized. People dress up, dance and party. In many cities, parades are organized with beautiful decorated floats. In France, the most famous is the carnival of Nice. In schools, children dress up and parade in the classroom or in the school. The Little Prince is famous throughout the world. It is Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's most famous book. I'm talking about this book today because I just learned that there is an exhibition dedicated to this book until June 26, 2022, in France. The exhibition is in Paris at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. You will be able to admire a part of the original manuscript which is usually kept at the Morgan Library in New York. This is the first time the manuscript has been exhibited elsewhere. The Little Prince was written during his exile in the United States and was published there, in French and English, in 1943. The Little Prince is not a simple tale for children. It is a philosophical work in which there are several levels of reading. You can find a bilingual version (French/English) of The Little Prince printed in parallel columns.
